While this website is mostly in German, we also wanted to ensure that everybody who wants to join us for our English debates and does not speak German can also find some information about this club and debating in general here in a more accessible language.
Our debating society was founded in 2013 and has been steadily growing since then. We hold weekly German debates (every Tuesday). Apart from that the club also encourages everyone to participate in competitions that take place in Germany all around the year. However, there is also a very active international scene hence competitions across Europe are also possible (e.g. Paris).
What is debating however and how can it be differentiated from discussions? Basically, debating abides certain rules unlike in discussions where everybody can speak whenever they want to and how long they want to. There are always two sides, one for (government) and one against (opposition) a so-called „motion“ (topic). Each side takes turns and holds speeches in which they explain why their side is „better“. Meaning has the better arguments and consequently the more convincing side. Meanwhile a jury evaluates these speeches and decides objectively which team wins.
So if you are interested in learning more about debating, work on your rhetoric or your argumentation, master any stage fright and get the chance to travel across Europe to participate in competitions, please feel free to come to our meetings.
We meet every Tuesday at 6pm, Licher Straße 68, room 28 for German debates
The English debates take place every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month starting in room 28 in Licher Straße 68 at 6pm as well.
